The importance of Tanking behind tiling in bathrooms
It is important that substrates in wet areas are protected by a suitable tanking system, rendering it impervious to water.
This means placing a membrane in either liquid or sheet form behind tiling to integrate the floor with the walls and to seal all joints.
In 2009 a code of practice was introduced - BS5385 Part 4 Wall and floor Tiling : Design & installation of ceramic and mosaic tiling in special conditions.Clause 7.2.4 paragraph e states `The use of impervious adhesives andgrouts is no substitute for a tanked installation.
Tilers and installers must now be aware of best practice and demonstrate their professionalism by making customers aware of BS5385
This should be mentioned on quotations and business cards.
